On March 29, 2013, the Town of East Gwillimbury suffered a terrible tragedy when a residential fire on Howard Avenue took the lives of Kevin, Jennifer, Robert and Cameron Dunsmuir. This was a tragic event that will not be forgotten by our community.

An annual Dunsmuir Memorial Hockey Tournament is held to honour the Dunsmuir family who were proud supporters and participants of minor hockey.  For more information visit the Dunsmuir Memorial Tournament page on East Gwillimbury Minor Hockey Association's website.

In April 2016, the Coroner completed an Inquest into the fire. The Inquest was presented to a jury who presented 33 recommendations to the Coroner aimed at increasing fire prevention and public education across Ontario. As part of the Inquest, the Town provided many recommendations, all of which were acknowledged and included in the final recommendations from the jury.

The Town with Emergency and Community Safety Services continues to focus on the three pillars of Fire Prevention including Prevention and Inspections, Public Education and Suppression.
