The Supporting Growth and Housing in York and Durham Regions Act, 2022 was passed on November 28, 2022. Through the Act, the Ontario government deemed the Upper York Sewage Solutions Individual Environmental Assessment withdrawn.
York Region and Durham Region are currently working with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to move forward with the new York Region Sewage Works Project mandated by the Act. The project will implement a southern servicing sewer infrastructure system to accommodate growth in the Towns of Aurora, Newmarket and East Gwillimbury.
The Act mandates York Region change from the previously proposed Lake Simcoe watershed solution, known as Upper York Sewage Solutions, to a Lake Ontario solution that will pump, move and treat wastewater at the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in Durham Region.
To provide additional wastewater servicing capacity in the interim for the Towns of Aurora, Newmarket and East Gwillimbury, York Region completed upgrades to the Aurora Sewage Pumping Station and is currently constructing the Henderson Sewage Pumping Station. The Holland Landing Lagoons wastewater treatment facility also remains in service at this time to address treatment needs within northern York Region communities.
