Municipalities are required under Section 238 of the Municipal Act, 2001 to pass a procedural by-law to guide how Council meetings operate. The by-law is used as a tool for Council to determine the structure of meetings, roles, and responsibilities of members, and voting procedures. The rules within the by-law ensure those who participate in Council meetings know what to do and that matters are dealt with in a fair and organized manner.
East Gwillimbury (EG) is in the process of reviewing its Procedural By-law to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and alignment with Council's objectives. The review will address challenges, enhance transparency, and improve decision-making during meetings. The current review process will allow staff and Council the opportunity to address recent legislative changes, review the by-law for clarity and user-friendliness, incorporate housekeeping updates and municipal best practices.
Staff and Council discussed potential updates to the Procedural By-law on April 16 during a Special Council Workshop:
If you have questions regarding EG’s Procedural By-law please email the Clerk’s Office.
Meetings are held in Council Chambers at the Civic Centre and live streamed on the Town’s YouTube channel. Council meetings are scheduled on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.
