June 1 marks the beginning of Pride Month! East Gwillimbury (EG) has numerous exciting events and activities to get involved in as we acknowledge and celebrate the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, recognize their meaningful contributions and history, and promote inclusion and equity for all.

Residents are invited to help launch Pride Month celebrations with the Town and York Pride at a flag raising ceremony on June 6 at 10 a.m. at the East Gwillimbury Civic Centre (19000 Leslie Street, Sharon). Later that day, the Town is celebrating Pride at the Farmers Market from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Civic Centre. EG will be participating in the York Pride Parade on June 15 at 3 p.m. along Main Street in Newmarket.

The East Gwillimbury Public Library is also hosting various initiatives and events including DIY Pride Button Making, Math is a Drag virtual session and DIY Pride Tote Bag Decorating.

“Celebrating Pride Month is an important commitment for East Gwillimbury,” said Mayor Virginia Hackson. “Together we foster a community where everyone feels they belong, and diversity is valued. I am pleased with our many continued efforts to recognize and celebrate Pride in EG, including our Pride crosswalk, annual Pride flag raising, and numerous activities within the Town. This month and every month, we are committed to promoting inclusion, providing education that fosters transformative learning, and supporting the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.”

Join the conversation on social media. EG invites everyone to use the hashtag #EGPride2024 to share their personal stories, celebratory photos, and messages of support during Pride Month. For more information on Pride in EG and resources, visit our website at www.eastgwillimbury.ca/Pride.
