Draft Tree By-Law for Public Review
Staff are proposing a new draft tree by-law to address the removal of trees on properties that are equal to or greater than 0.5 acres that do not meet the definition of a woodlot or woodland as defined in the York Region Tree By-Law. The by-law will help to ensure the tree canopy in EG is protected. The Town will be asking for public feedback on the draft by-law in early 2024. You can view a copy of the draft by-law on the Town’s website.
Annual Safer Streets Program
Staff provided an update regarding the Town’s traffic program and Safer Streets Initiatives including highlights of the traffic activities, events, and successes in the Town of East Gwillimbury and proposed new initiatives for 2024. Some of these projects include traffic volume and speed data collection, a radar speed camera program, and expanding the speed message board program. You can read the full report on the Town’s website.
Municipal Housing Targets
On October 13, Mayor Hackson submitted a letter to the Minister of Municipal Affairs of Housing confirming the Town’s commitment to meet the provincially prescribed target of 4,300 new homes in our community by 2031. This commitment is part of Provincial Bill 23, More Homes Built Faster Act and demonstrates the Town’s commitment to working collaboratively with all partners to address Ontario’s housing crisis.
The province determined that confirmation of the housing target comes with Strong Mayor’s Powers and enables the municipality to be eligible for funding as part of the Building Faster Fund. On October 31, the Town was awarded Strong Mayor Powers by the province.
The province has asked municipalities to submit a Housing Pledge to showcase how the Town will achieve this target. A Housing Pledge will be brought forward at a future Council meeting for Council’s consideration.
