Council Highlights - July 27 and 28, 2021

Southlake Regional Health Centre - Representatives from Southlake Regional Health Centre delivered a presentation about the Centre’s Master Plan including proposed plans for how the Centre will grow and evolve to meet the needs of the community. Council supported the urgent need for a new Health Centre.

Bradford Bypass - The Ontario Ministry of Transportation and AECOM provided an update on the status of the Bradford Bypass Environmental Assessment, showcasing the proposed route and environmental features of the project as well as the components of the Preliminary Design study, which is now underway. Council continues to support this initiative and reiterated its desire to see a full interchange at 2nd Concession.

Mid-Year Review - Staff provided an update on work and accomplishments from January to June 2021. Highlights include the completion of the Operations Centre, Civic Precinct/Leslie Street four corner improvements, and the launch of two websites. Additional highlights will be posted in an upcoming Town Page and on the Town’s website.

Health & Active Living Plaza (HALP) Sustainability Options - Staff presented details about sustainability options for the HALP. Thinking Green Development Standards, as outlined in the consultant’s report, will be adopted with additional sustainability concepts added where possible. 

Coordinating Town Plans - Staff provided an update regarding the coordinated approach for updating the Official Plan and related Master Plans to 2051. Coordination between land use, infrastructure and financial planning helps to ensure responsible growth management and supports access to parks and recreation, diverse housing options, local employment, walkability, and service amenities.

Land Acknowledgement - Council passed a resolution to offer a land acknowledgement at the beginning of all formal Town organized events and at the beginning of the other Town events/meetings. The Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation endorsed and approved the land acknowledgement statement. Staff will also report back to Council on a draft Equity, Diversity and Inclusion strategy and on the status of plans for Indigenous public art in East Gwillimbury. 

Community Flagpole Procedure - An update was provided regarding a new procedure for submitting a request to raise a flag on the Town’s community flagpole. Details, including organizations that may submit a request and an online request form, will be available on the Town’s website by early August.  

New Public Art Policy! - Council approved a Public Art Policy which includes the establishment of a Public Art Reserve and funding, and Public Art Donation and Contribution Reserve. The policy is intended to leverage artists’ talent, vision, and experience to create an inclusive community that celebrates, appreciates, and promotes arts, culture, diversity, and the heritage of East Gwillimbury by integrating artwork into public view/spaces. 

Safer Streets Initiative Moves Ahead - Council gave the green light to reduce the speed limit on the Town’s local subdivision roads from 50km/hr to 40km/hr as part of the Town’s Safer Street Initiative. New speed limit signs will be installed by spring 2022 and various communications tools will be used to inform the community when speed limit signs are in place.

Yonge Street Improvements

Utility relocation has started on Yonge Street as part of the Yonge Street Improvement project. From July 26 to September there may lane reductions during off-peak times from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. between Davis Drive and Green Lane. This week the sidewalk on the west side of Yonge Street between Green Lane and Green Lane Centre will be closed. There are no bus stop relocations at this time. Fire Extinguisher Training Days - Emergency Community Safety Services staff are hosting fire extinguisher training on August 10, 17, and 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Mount Albert Fire Station. Take advantage of this exciting opportunity and sign up by emailing sign up by email.

Back to School Jitters - On August 19 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., join this workshop to learn how to reduce stress and manage jitters about heading back to school. James Anglican Church Food Pantry - Open every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon, located at 18804 Leslie Street. Residents can drop in to the food pantry for assistance, if you require clothing, please call 905-478-1959 to make arrangements for pick-up.
