Council Highlights for December 19
Backyard Hen Pilot Program coming in 2024 – Council approved a temporary pilot program to allow residents to have backyard hens on properties that are less than one acre. This pilot program follows a public survey opportunity, where many residents indicated they were in favour of the program. The pilot program will be rolled out in March 2024. Watch the eNews and the Town’s website for more details.
Sharon Development Site Plan Approved – Committee endorsed a site plan for land at 19086 Leslie Street, at the corner of Mount Albert Road and Leslie Street. The site plan includes seven 5-storey residential apartment buildings, one commercial building and one stand-alone commercial building. The design will have a heritage look and feel to match the downtown core. Part of the property will also be conveyed to the Town for public use. Despite having the site plan approved, this site still requires allocation to move forward. For more information visit www.eastgwillimbury.ca/planningapplications.
Draft Tree By-Law Public Open Houses – Staff are proposing a new draft tree by-law to address the removal of trees on private properties that are .5 acres or bigger that do not meet the definition of a woodlot or woodland as defined in the York Region Tree By-Law. This by-law will help to ensure the tree canopy in EG is protected. The Town is hosting three public open houses in 2024 to gather public feedback. You can view a copy of the draft by-law on the Town’s website. The open houses will be held:

Thursday February 8, 2024

Wednesday February 28, 2024

Congratulations Huron Heights senior and junior football teams – Council recognized the senior and junior Warrior Football Teams from Huron Heights Secondary School. The senior team recently won the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) 2023 Golden Horseshoe Bowl championship, and the Junior team won the 2023 Junior Metro Bowl championship. Congratulations to both teams!
Water and Wastewater budget approved – Council approved the 2024 water and wastewater budget. The budget includes an increase to the variable rate for water usage. This is the first increase that the Town has made to the variable rates in the last five years. The increase will help to fund the hiring of 2 new front-line staff and offset budget pressures from cost increases from York Region. (York Region supplies potable water to the Town and provides wastewater treatment, the costs for this water are approximately 2/3 of the Town’s water and wastewater costs. In 2024, the Region has proposed a 3.3% overall increase for water and wastewater costs).
The 2024 rates are:
Based on the change to the variable rate, there is an estimated impact of approximately $5.20 per month for the average users.
The Town previously approved a multi-year increase to the fixed rate for high water users. This impact effects approximately 1% of accounts, typically businesses or multiple units on one account. This ensures that high water users are paying for their share of repair and maintenance of the water infrastructure, based on usage.
