East Gwillimbury delegation attends Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference in support of local priorities

An East Gwillimbury (EG) delegation consisting of members of municipal Council and staff attended the 2024 Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference, August 18 – 21 in Ottawa, Ontario.

The annual conference is AMO's premier event, which provides Ontario municipalities an opportunity to speak with provincial decision-makers on matters of mutual interest.

EG’s delegation met with provincial cabinet ministers and senior staff to discuss matters impacting EG during a time of growth and challenges to sustainability. EG suggested several mutually beneficial opportunities for the province and the municipality to work together:

  • Minister Sylvia Jones (Ministry of Health) to advocate for opportunities for health infrastructure to strengthen and enable delivery of care in the community.
  • Solicitor General Michael Kerzner (Ministry of the Solicitor General) to advocate for improved health and safety equipment on behalf of EG’s firefighters.
  • Minister David Piccini (Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development) to advocate for opportunities to expand training opportunities and enhance public programs and services.
  • Parliamentary Assistant Amarjot Sandhu (Ministry of Infrastructure) to advocate for EG’s infrastructure needs.

“The EG team successfully participated in the AMO conference this year as a part of our ongoing collaboration efforts with other levels of governments. We have opportunities to collaborate on initiatives to support health care, infrastructure, skills development, and EG’s front line workers. Thank you to Ministers Jones and Piccini, Solicitor General Kerzner, and Parliamentary Assistant Amarjot Sandhu and the Ministries’ knowledgeable staff for meeting with our delegation,” said Mayor Virginia Hackson, East Gwillimbury. “Together, we have much work to advance and opportunities to address these matters of mutual interest.”

EG Councillors Susan Lahey and Scott Crone attended on behalf of all of Council, supported by staff. In addition, the conference also offered collaboration and learning opportunities through best practice workshops, presentations of case examples from other municipalities, and information sessions across many areas of municipal interest. This year, AMO celebrates its 125th anniversary as the organization dedicated to supporting the common interests of Ontario’s 444 municipalities.
