Council provides strong support to protect the economy and ensure Town procurement stays on track.

East Gwillimbury has responded to the enactment of United States tariffs on Canadian goods, through an immediate commitment to review procurement policies in response to the Provincial actions on procurement.

EG Council voted unanimously in favour of the following motion at the Committee of the Whole Council meeting on March 4, 2025: “Whereas today, Premier Ford has announced that all U.S.-based companies are banned from participating in Ontario procurement; and, Whereas the Premier has asked that all municipalities follow suit in that announcement; Be it resolved that the Council of the Town of East Gwillimbury directs staff to prepare a resolution for Council’s consideration to amend the Town’s procurement policies to respond in similar fashion to the current tariff regime in line with the Province of Ontario’s response; and, that this resolution be adopted at the Council meeting on March 4, 2025.”

On February 19, Town staff brought forward a memorandum to Council that provided a preliminary assessment of the anticipated local impact of tariffs, and identified early response actions.

In the days to come, staff will review current and future opportunities to align with the practices the Province outlined, while ensuring that EG procurements continue in a timely and orderly manner.

Further, EG continues to monitor and support local businesses through information outreach and support programs available through the Town’s Economic Development team – more information can be found at www.advantageEG.ca.

Facts on procurement in EG:

  • Historically, almost all Town procurements for services and construction have been supplied and built by Ontario based firms, many within York Region.
  • EG currently has approximately $100 million in ongoing capital projects ($80 million approved before 2025, and $20 approved in the 2025 budget).
