East Gwillimbury wins two awards for the official Operations Centre Opening

(East Gwillimbury, ON) December 6, 2022 – East Gwillimbury is extremely excited to be the recipient of two Canadian Public Works Association awards for the official opening of the Operations Centre. The Town won awards for First-time Entry and Community of 25,000 to 99,999.

The Canadian Public Works Association hosts an annual awards contest to recognize municipal National Public Works Week (NPWW) events and programs. The Operations Centre opening took place during NPWW, and thousands of residents enjoyed hands-on touch-a-truck vehicle displays, interactive booths, and many family-friendly activities. The event also showcased the activities the Town’s operations teams undertake to keep Canada’s fastest-growing municipality moving.

“On behalf of Council, I applaud the work our operations teams do each day to build and maintain our roads, parks and water infrastructure,” said Mayor Virginia Hackson. “Congratulations to everyone who was involved in planning the opening celebration. We had a great turnout and look forward to hosting many events at the Operations Centre in the future.”

This year’s theme for NPWW was “Ready and Resilient”. East Gwillimbury parks, roads and water staff are “Ready and Resilient” each day to maintain the Town’s growing community, including 280 acres of parkland, 450 kms of roads and 162 kms of watermains. The Operations Centre is located at 19850 Woodbine Avenue and is the Town’s largest capital project to date. It is the home to the departments that are responsible for maintaining critical Town infrastructure and core services such as Roads, Fleet, Water and Wastewater, Parks, Facilities and Emergency Services. Over 120 full-time and seasonal staff work out of the facility throughout the year.

Completed in 2021, the facility is on a 20-acre site, has a modern look, with various efficient and environmental features which include collaborative meeting areas, state-of-the-art training space, 15,000 square-foot sand and salt dome, electronic vehicle charging stations, white roof technology, a 1400 square-foot greenhouse, and a tree farm. The building also houses the Town’s emergency operations centre.
