East Gwillimbury (EG) is excited to announce a significant advancement in its commitment to environmental stewardship with the launch of its Green Fleet Strategy which highlights the Town’s dedication to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable transportation solutions.

Currently, EG operates a fleet of 29 light-duty vehicles, including two plug-in hybrids, one electric vehicle (EV), and an additional EV on order. This transition to greener vehicles is part of the Town's broader Environmental Strategy, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering a cleaner, greener community.

Key highlights of the Green Fleet Initiative:

  • Expanding EV infrastructure: EG currently has 10 public charging stations and three fleet charging stations, with plans to add 14 more public locations. This expansion supports the growing number of EVs and encourages residents to make eco-friendly choices.
  • Cost efficiency and environmental impact: A recent EV suitability assessment compared an EV pick-up truck with a conventional V6-powered pick-up truck, highlighting the impressive savings:
    • Maintenance costs: The maintenance cost for an EV is 36% ($9,100) less.
    • Fuel and electricity: The cost of fueling an EV is 70% ($22,500) less.
    • Lifecycle cost: An EV incurs a capital cost that is 30% ($11,200) more.
    • Total lifecycle savings: An EV will achieve a total lifecycle savings of $20,300 over a conventional V6 pick-up truck.
  • Environmental impact: In 2022, the Town's fleet emitted 468 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2). This is equivalent to the emissions produced by 103 gas-powered cars driven for a year or the annual energy use of more than 60 homes. An EV pick-up truck reduces emissions by half compared to the average gasoline pick-up truck, contributing to air quality and climate change mitigation1.

“The Green Fleet Strategy is a testament to East Gwillimbury's commitment to making impactful environmental changes,” said Mayor Virginia Hackson. “The Town will continue to explore and implement innovative initiatives to enhance sustainability efforts and encourage change.”

In March 2024, Council approved EG's Thinking Green Environmental Strategy, which outlines the Town’s goals and objectives to support and protect its natural environment while guiding the municipality's journey toward building a more diverse, resilient, and sustainable Town for years to come.
