Council highlights header

Highlights from the June 25 Committee of the Whole Council meeting. 

A deputation requesting a minor variance for a digital billboard was heard.  

Council recognized artist and volunteer Bev Hall as the winner of the 2024 Ontario Senior of the Year Award.

The Town’s 2023 Draft Audited Financial Statements from KPMG were presented

EG’s 2024 Development Charge By-law Amendment was on the agenda. The Development Charges Act enables municipalities to impose a charge on new development to recover growth-related capital costs. Development charges are an important revenue source for EG. 

Several reports and memos from Corporate Services came forward:  

Parks, Recreation and Culture reported on Food and Fitness services for the Health and Active Living Plaza. 

A Zoning By-Law Amendment was on the agenda for 17743 McCowan Road. 

A memo on EG’s Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional (ICI) Sanitary Allocation Update was also shared. 

Council at 6 p.m. 

A Public Meeting took place to receive input for an Official Plan Amendment Application, 18642 Leslie Street GP Ltd., 18642 Leslie Street [OPA.24.01]. 

There are no meetings next week. The next Council meetings will be on July 23, 2024.

Fireworks in EG
Fireworks can only be set off on private property between sunset and 11 p.m. from June 29 to July 3. You must be 18 years old to set off fireworks. Enjoy fireworks safely by following these tips:

  • Choose an area at least 30 m by 30 m with no trees or power lines
  • Never hold fireworks when using them 
  • Place all used fireworks and those that did not light in a pail of water
  • Never throw fireworks 
  • Read the instructions on each product carefully

National Lifeguard Course

  • July 19 to 21

Participants must be 15 years of age and hold a Bronze Cross Certification, Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid or Standard First Aid from an approved agency.

Join York University’s YSpace for Business Foundations, covering vital business management aspects. The virtual workshop series runs weekly from 6 to 8 p.m. until August 27, 2024.

Topics include market research, business operations setup, business plan development, mental well-being, branding strategies, and more.

Attend at least seven out of nine workshops to receive an Innovation York Certificate of Completion, showcasing your dedication to entrepreneurship essentials.

Business Foundations is free for entrepreneurs aged 18 and above in York Region, primarily East Gwillimbury, Georgina, and the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nations.

Make a Cyanotype Printed Tote Bag or T-shirt!
Join the Library on Saturday, July 6 at 2 p.m. at the Mount Albert Library branch to customize t-shirts and tote bags. Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces stunning blue prints using the sun to develop images. Bring a tote bag or t-shirt to create prints using natural materials like flowers and leaves. The program will run weather permitting.


The program is for adults and teens. Cost is $2 per person. Please register in the branch to save your spot.
