Highlights from the March 22, 2022 meeting

Hybrid Council meetings to begin in April
With the province lifting the mask mandate and capacity limits, East Gwillimbury is now planning to gradually resume in-person Council meetings. Modest technological improvements to support hybrid meetings are in place so that Council, staff, the public and presenters have an option to participate either in-person or remote. Hybrid Council meetings will begin on April 5, 2022. For more information, visit www.eastgwillimbury.ca/agendas.

Business incubator program ready to launch
East Gwillimbury is working with Georgina and York University’s YSpace to deliver a two-year Business Incubator/Accelerator pilot project to support entrepreneurs and economic growth during the recovery phase of the pandemic and beyond. The project is the next phase of the highly successful Business Bounce Back Program which provided 70 participants from the hospitality and tourism industry with workshops and mentorship opportunities. The project secured $325,000 in funding from the Town of East Gwillimbury, the Town of Georgina, and York University to establish the entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Water and wastewater rates frozen for 2022
For the third consecutive year, the Town has frozen its water and wastewater rates. Rates are calculated during the budget process and are set for a period of one year beginning in April of each year.

Cannabis production facilities public meeting
During the time of the interim control bylaw cannabis production facilities were not permitted to be developed. A statutory public meeting will be held in April to determine the appropriate regulations for these facilities. Notices will be published at the end of March.

Drinking water continues to be maintained at a high standard
The 2021 Water Summary Report for the Town indicates that the Town’s drinking water systems meet or exceed regulatory requirements. The report covered the period of January 1 to December 31, 2021. Results were based on more than 5,800 water samples taken from the Town’s three large municipal drinking water systems.

Inclusion crosswalk installation
A new inclusion crosswalk will be installed at the Civic Centre in preparation for Pride month (June) 2022. The initiative came through a Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee of Council recommendation in February. The crosswalk will be painted within the entrance driveway between the Civic Centre and Temperance Hall. An implementation strategy for future crosswalks will be developed based on the review and performance of the Civic Centre project.

Trail safety guide and Ambassador Program
New trail safety signs, digital mapping and trail ambassadors will soon be in place to support trail enjoyment for all. Funding from the Canada Infrastructure Program was used to create new signs which will be placed on Town trails beginning summer, 2022. Also, this summer, the Town is piloting a new Trail Ambassador Program. Ambassadors will interact, engage, and educate trail users on safety and share trail mapping resources.
