The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority is planning a controlled burn at the Rogers Native Meadow Project site. The controlled burn is scheduled to occur from approximately 2 to 6 p.m. on April 12. Site and weather conditions will continue to be monitored to determine the ideal time of day for the burn to be conducted.
The Nokiidaa Trail on the north side of the river will remain open on April 12, but users will be advised to use the trail at their own risk. Changing weather conditions could lead to smoke in this area. Anyone sensitive to smoke is encouraged to proceed with caution. The trail on the south side of the river will be closed to the public during controlled burn operations for the safety of trail users. Observers must remain in designated areas.
These carefully set and managed fires are an important restoration tool to help maintain, protect and enhance meadow habitat. Over the past four years, we have worked closely with our grassland contractor to establish this meadow, which is coming along well. This prescribed burn will help give it an extra boost this spring and allow the native plants to thrive!
