Council highlights from the September 20 meeting.

Holding Hope
Public Art for Children of Peace Park East Gwillimbury Council approved the installation of Holding Hope in Children of Peace Park following an extensive community engagement process of seeking and selecting design proposals. The Arts and Culture Advisory Committee recommended Holding Hope as the preferred concept. Holding Hope was created by Kyle Thornley, a blacksmith who has created art using metal for the past 18 years. The description of the piece states “Holding Hope is offered to encourage feelings of curiosity, gratitude, delight, and well-being as it celebrates and keeps the stories of the past and inspires hope for the future.” Visit www.eastgwillimbury.ca/artsandculture for details.

Environmental Initiatives Update
Staff presented an update of Environmental Initiatives to Council which included an overview of initiatives underway and options for moving forward. Earlier this year, Council approved funding for an Environmental Initiatives Coordinator who is conducting a review of best practices and EG activities including its Thinking Green Standards, the Community Energy Plan and the Thinking Green Sustainability Strategy. Future work in this area will have 5 focus areas: land, water, air, climate change, and education. The development of an Environmental Strategy is proposed to take place during the next term of council.
