Yonge Street Improvement Project Update

Work on this project started in 2021 to help better York Region travellers and the relationship between East Gwillimbury and Newmarket. This will benefit all drivers, cyclists, runners and walkers. This improvement project will take place in stages to alleviate traffic to drivers and pedestrians. The anticipated project completion will be in late 2026. 

Project update:

• Some utility work is already complete
• Phase one of construction is starting this month and includes installing retaining walls, noise barriers and temporary traffic signals, and relocating hydro lines, watermains and utilities
• Phase two will be road widening and reconstruction work and is expected to start in fall 2024

Impacts to travellers:

• Lane reductions during off-peak travel times
• Temporary sidewalk and bus stop relocations
• Temporary lane shifts to move traffic around work areas
